New from DrugInfo: Information and communication technologies in reducing alcohol and other drug-related harms

Information and communications technologies (ICT) are increasingly preferred as an accessible way of providing and accessing health information and treatment. This method of providing health information has been found to be particularly appealing to young people.

Support for the use of online and technology-based interventions in the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) field has been growing, and their potential to access new and hard to reach population groups has been identified.

The new look DrugInfo publications, which include the DrugInfo newsletter and Prevention Research Quarterly (PRQ), examine this issue.

The publications aim to identify and evaluate services and programs that use ICT to prevent AOD harms in various settings.

DrugInfo newsletter

The latest issue of the DrugInfo newsletter focuses on reducing AOD harms using ICT, and provides practical examples of some of the successes, issues and barriers to prevention work with various communities including young people.

Prevention Research Quarterly (PRQ)

The latest issue of Prevention Research Quarterly is written by Simone Rodda, Angela Harney and Professor Dan Lubman.

The issues paper reviews a number of AOD services and programs that use ICT in some way, including websites, self-assessment, moderated forums, self-directed therapy and e-counselling. The issues paper also includes an extensive list of websites that can offer further information.

DrugInfo seminar: Older people and alcohol and other drugs

Australia's population is ageing rapidly. Older Australians are more likely to drink on a daily basis, take multiple medications, have multiple medical problems and be socially isolated.

  • 5 September 2011

  • 10.00am – 12.30pm (9.30am registration)

  • Angliss Conference Centre

Level 5, 555 LaTrobe Street (cnr King St.), Melbourne.
  • To book your place, tel. 1300 85 85 84 or send your name, organisation and contact phone number to druginfo@adf.org.au.
  • Bookings are strictly limited, so you are advised to book early. Bookings close at 4:00 pm on Thursday 1 September 2011.
